YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN are an ever mutating, Asian diasporic and Indigenous art cult that creates maximalist, genre melting rock. Inspired by the more macabre aspects of Buddhism, they infuse heavy metal with a dark, psych-pop sensibility and incorporate traditional forms of Iroquois social song, Filipino percussion, and Asian opera. This self-styled “Noh-Wave” collective combines their music with ambitiousDIY stage shows, designing monochrome paper sets, facepaint and elaborate performances. YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN has worked within a variety of disciplines, creating their own Noh-Wave Opera “33” (Rhubarb Festival/Pop Montreal, 2012), art installations such as their 2008 exhibit “Konami Komando”, and often featuring dance and performance art during their live performance. They’ve received nominations and awards for their projects, including their album “YT//ST” (Polaris shortlist, 2012), their sophomore album “UZU” (Polaris/Juno,2014) and their soundtrack for Drinkbox’s award winning video game “Severed” (Canadian Video Game Award for Best Musical Score, 2016). The band has touredthrough North America and Europe and have opened for recognized acts such as Thurston Moore, Lydia Lunch, Quintron and Ms. Pussycat, Perfect Pussy and Xiu Xiu. In 2016, members Joanna Delos Reyes, Hiroki Tanaka, and Brandon Lim joined long time members Alaska B, Ange Loft, and Brendan Swanson.
